On November 7, Gerard Encina-Llamas successfully defended defend his PhD thesis "Characterizing cochlear hearing impairment using advanced electrophysiological methods".

Gerard’s project was about the characterization of sound processing at levels relevant for everyday communication. He focused on techniques that allow measuring the neural activity in the auditory system of humans, combined with computational models of the neural representation of sound.
His work is connected to recent findings that exposure with sounds of high intensity lead to irreversible damages which are not detectable with current audiological screening methods.

The results of his work will be useful in linking recent physiological findings to human hearing and to develop more sensitive audiological screening procedure for improved preservation of hearing.
